I've recently had the pleasure of working with Buglight Theatre on Small Wide World, a wonderfully quirky and experimental project combining live performance, film and augmented reality (AR)!

Small Wide World is a miniature Northern town brought to life through your phone or tablet. Audiences can explore its tiny streets, from the local chippy and launderette to the working men's club, discovering little stories and characters along the way. It's a lovely celebration of Northern working-class life, using technology to create something playful, intimate and a little bit different! I

I spent a brilliant day filming against a green screen, playing Lynda, a quirky little character who lives in this miniature world. It was such a fun and unusual experience, performing scenes without being able to see the environments that would eventually surround us! I absolutely loved getting stuck into something so experimental and seeing how performance and technology can come together in new ways.

The experience is set to make its debut on 18 October 2026, and I can't wait to see how it all comes together!

Creative Team

The project is led by Tom Diffenthal, a Sheffield-based filmmaker, immersive artist and creative technologist, in collaboration with Buglight Theatre.

Buglight is a South Yorkshire-based company creating original theatre and film, with a particular focus on supporting working-class creatives and telling stories rooted in local communities.

Project Lead / Immersive Artist: Tom Diffentha

It's been a real joy working with such a creative team and being part of something that explores new ways of telling stories. I'm looking forward to seeing this tiny world come to life!
